HARRISONBURG, Va., April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
-- Verizon
Communications customers will lose the quality service and accessibility
provided by employees at the Verizon Plus store if Verizon goes through
with the scheduled closing of that location on June 21.
"Right now, customers can turn to that store to buy cell phone or
DirecTV service, pay their Verizon bills, schedule landline service and
much more. It's the only such one-stop location in the state," said Bobby
Council, president of CWA Local 2275.
The six employees who work at the Verizon Plus store are members of CWA
2275 and will be out of work when the store is closed.
"We questioned Verizon as to why it was closing the store and whether
there was a dollar volume of sales or other criteria that had to be met to
keep it open, because this store is an important resource for Verizon
customers. Unfortunately, according to Verizon, keeping Verizon Plus open
isn't in the company's 'strategic plan,' we were told," Council said.
Council indicated that Verizon would likely shift some of the work to
the non-union Verizon Wireless stores, although many of the services would
no longer be available to customers.
The CWA local is building support in the Harrisonburg community to keep
the store open, including a petition drive.
