Both the House of Representatives and the Senate
passed the Broadband Data Improvement Act, (S. 1492)
a key initiative of the Communications Workers of
America's Speed Matters project. The bill now moves
on to a joint conference committee to work out the
differences between the House and the Senate
versions.
CWA has been advocating for this bill since Sen.
Daniel Inouye introduced it in May 2007. The bill
calls for the federal government to collect and
maintain data on the status of broadband deployment
throughout the country. It also takes proactive steps
to encourage public/private partnerships to identify
barriers to broadband adoption on the state level.
Sen. Inouye further explains the importance and benefits of his bill:
If the United States is to remain a world leader in technology, we need a national broadband network that is second-to-none. The federal government has a responsibility to ensure the continued rollout of broadband access, as well as the successful deployment of the next generation of broadband technology.
